Erie Lodging Registration Comes Before Bed Tax Collection

Erie County lodging operators should register with the Comptroller and understand rates before collecting room tax.

Published June 23, 2026 ยท Last verified June 23, 2026

An Erie County lodging operator must deal with room tax at the start. The rules cover hotels, motels, short-term rentals, vacation rentals, and other guest lodging.

File a Certificate of Registration within three days after opening or buying an operating hotel. The Comptroller then issues a Certificate of Authority. It allows the operator to collect the county hotel tax. The rate is 3 percent or 5 percent, based on room count.

Keep the registration, certificate, room count, tax rate, exemption records, returns, and payment proof with the bookings. Put the opening or purchase date on the filing calendar.
