Accessibility

A directory should work for every reader.

Our approach

New York Porch works toward an accessible experience across phones, tablets, desktop browsers, keyboards, screen readers, zoomed text, and other assistive technology. Accessibility is ongoing work, not a one-time certificate.

What we test

Our regular checks include:

  • semantic headings, landmarks, lists, and form labels;
  • keyboard navigation and visible focus;
  • text alternatives for meaningful images;
  • color contrast and information that does not depend on color alone;
  • browser zoom, responsive layouts, and text that reflows on small screens;
  • clear form instructions, errors, and status messages; and
  • automated page checks plus manual sampling of important paths and interactive tools.

Third-party sites

Many directory links lead to government agencies and other sites we do not control. Their accessibility can vary. If an official source is difficult to use, tell us which page and task are involved and we will try to identify another official route or format.

Report a barrier

Send accessibility problems to [email protected] or use the feedback form. Include the page address, what you were trying to do, the problem you encountered, and, if useful, the browser or assistive technology involved. Do not include sensitive personal information.

If you need site information in another reasonable format, describe the page or material and the format that would help. We will make a good-faith effort to respond and provide an accessible alternative where practicable.
