Deer and bear hunting in New York
The 2026 answer starts with the Wildlife Management Unit, zone, method, privilege, and tag you will use.
New York does not have one deer opener or one bear map. Northern Zone, Southern Zone, Westchester, Suffolk, and individual Wildlife Management Units use different dates and legal methods.

The annual hunting license is the base; bow and muzzleloader seasons need the matching privilege.
First-time hunters need hunter education. Bowhunting eligibility requires bowhunter education. A Deer Management Permit is a separate antlerless tag tied to a Wildlife Management Unit.

A hunter may apply for up to 4 Deer Management Permits: 2 in limited WMUs and 2 in unlimited WMUs.
DMPs are antlerless tags tied to a Wildlife Management Unit. In 23 unlimited WMUs, a used and reported DMP is replaced with a Bonus DMP. Reporting an antlerless deer taken on a valid antlerless tag can also earn a second Antlered Deer Tag, which cannot be used in the September antlerless season.

The 2026 Northern Zone regular deer season runs October 24 through December 6.
Early bow runs September 27 through October 23. Youth firearms run October 10 through 12. Early muzzleloader runs October 17 through 23, and selected WMUs have late bow and muzzleloader December 7 through 13.

The 2026 Southern Zone regular deer season runs November 21 through December 13.
Early bow runs October 1 through November 20. Late bow and muzzleloader run December 14 through 22 and again December 26 through January 1 where allowed. Selected WMUs have a September 12 through 20 antlerless season.

Westchester and Suffolk use separate bow-focused deer rows.
Both have a September 12 through 20 early-antlerless season that is bow only. Westchester WMU 3S then runs October 1 through December 31, bow only. Suffolk WMU 1C runs October 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027, bow only, with a separate January special-firearms permit season.

Black bear dates depend on the colored 2026 zone map, not just Northern or Southern Zone.
Some Northern and Southern areas have early, bow, youth, regular, or muzzleloader seasons while others do not. Match the property to DEC's bear map before using a deer date for bear. A resident or nonresident hunter may take 1 bear per license year.

Crossbows may be used during bowhunting seasons with the bowhunting privilege.
That does not make every firearm legal everywhere. Rifle, shotgun, handgun, muzzleloader, bow, and crossbow rules still depend on the season and county. Use DEC's current legal-implements map.

New York City and all of Nassau County are closed to deer and bear hunting.
DEC also lists the City of Binghamton and specified areas around Buffalo, Big Moose Lake, Old Forge, and Inlet as closed. Town laws, landowner posting, and managed-land rules can close additional property.

Deer and bear hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
A firearm hunter and anyone accompanying that hunter must wear the required fluorescent orange or pink: 250 square inches above the waist, a qualifying pattern, or a qualifying hat visible from all directions.

E-tag users report immediately; paper-tag users tag the animal and report within 48 hours.
An e-tag user reports in HuntFishNY and attaches identifying information if the carcass leaves the hunter's possession. A paper-tag user completes and protects the tag, attaches it when required, and reports through DEC within 48 hours.

An adult hunter plans to hunt deer on private land in a Southern Zone WMU on October 10. The hunter has completed hunter and bowhunter education, carries the annual license and bowhunting privilege, confirms that October 10 falls inside the Southern Zone early-bow season, checks the property and local discharge rules, and chooses paper tags or e-tags before leaving home.

Start with the exact property, not the nearest town. Find its Wildlife Management Unit and whether it sits in Northern Zone, Southern Zone, Westchester, or Suffolk. For bear, match it to the colored bear-season map too.
Then pick the date and method. The same property may be open to bowhunting and closed to regular firearms on the date you chose. A county can also limit which big-game implements are legal.
Finish with the tag and land rule. Private land needs permission. Public land can add access permits, parking rules, closed areas, or method limits.

Out-of-state deer parts have a separate New York rule
New York restricts whole carcasses and intact heads from CWD-susceptible deer species harvested outside the state. Allowed parts include deboned venison, a cleaned skull cap, antlers with no flesh, a raw or processed cape or hide, cleaned teeth or lower jaw, and finished taxidermy products.
Packages brought into New York need the species, harvest state or country, and hunter's name and address. If an imported animal later tests positive for CWD, notify DEC within 24 hours.
