Westchester Contractors Need a License Check

Westchester homeowners should confirm a contractor's county home-improvement license before paying a deposit or signing a renovation contract.

A Westchester renovation should start with the license check, not the deposit. Westchester County Consumer Protection says county law requires home improvement contractors to have a county license. The department also maintains a list of licensed contractors and posts a Find a Licensed Contractor route.

That check matters for kitchens, baths, roofs, decks, windows, masonry, and other home-improvement work. A smooth sales call does not prove licensing.

Before paying, search the contractor name and compare the business name with the written contract. Save the license result, estimate, insurance paperwork, date checked, and contractor contact information together. If a payment or permit question comes up later, those details make the next call much easier.

This is not about distrusting every contractor. It is about making sure the paperwork matches the person asking for money. In a busy Westchester renovation market, a homeowner can feel rushed by deposits, start dates, and material orders. The license check slows the decision down in a useful way.

Keep the Westchester County Consumer Protection result with the contract, not in a separate tab that disappears later.
