Morgan Hill Connects Truxton and Cuyler to Syracuse-Edge Recreation

Morgan Hill State Forest gives the high ground between Syracuse and Cortland a shared public-land identity. DEC locates the 5,284-acre forest in Fabius, Truxton, and Cuyler, so one outing can feel as if it belongs to more than one county map.

The setting is upland forest, roughly 1,200 to 2,000 feet, with conifers, hardwoods, hemlocks, small valleys, and creeks giving the place its hill-country feel. Trails and roads are the story here. DEC lists 13.1 miles of marked foot trails linking the western part of the forest with Labrador Hollow and continuing east as part of the Finger Lakes Trail and North Country National Scenic Trail.

It also lists 11.5 miles of Public Forest Access Roads, best reached in summer and fall, plus 15 miles of mainly single-track multiple-use trail and 9.9 miles of snowmobile trails.

For Truxton and Cuyler, Morgan Hill is a trail-and-road corridor where county edges, seasonal access, and different kinds of recreation meet. That is what makes the Syracuse-Cortland edge feel outdoorsy in a practical way: a walk, ride, or winter route can start with the same forest, but the road and trail choices still matter.
