Check Rockaway Lifeguards and Water Status
A Rockaway beach day works better when lifeguard hours and NYC Health water status are checked before anyone heads into the surf.

Rockaway is a real ocean beach at the edge of the city. That is its appeal, and also why the water check matters. NYC311 says city lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 AM to 6 PM during beach season and that swimming is allowed when lifeguards are on duty.
Water-quality status can change too. City beach pages use labels such as open, advisory, closed, or closed for season. Rockaway and Breezy Point beaches are sampled biweekly, and advisories can be tied to bacteria, rain, debris, sewage, or other contamination.
Make four checks before entering the water: the Rockaway beach page, the city water-quality map, posted flags, and lifeguard directions on the sand. During beach season, swimming belongs inside the city lifeguard window. The status may say open, advisory, closed, or closed for season, so use the label shown for that day. Do not let an old beach plan override the posted direction. If swimming does not fit the current status, the boardwalk, sand, food, and ocean air can still make it a Rockaway day.
