Richfield’s lake story is not as loud as Cooperstown’s Otsego Lake, and that is part of its appeal. Canadarago Lake gives the town a working, fishable, four-season kind of identity.
DEC lists Canadarago Lake in Otsego County, in the Towns of Richfield and Exeter. The lake is 1,944 acres, with 10 miles of shoreline, 3.58 miles of length, and a maximum depth of 44 feet. It also has moderate rooted aquatic vegetation to 15 feet, which is the kind of detail anglers and shoreline neighbors notice before anyone else does.
The calendar changes the feel. DEC says the lake is popular during all seasons for panfish and walleye. Summer brings multiple bass tournaments targeting largemouth and smallmouth bass. Ice fishing is permitted in winter. The state boat launch is off NY Route 28, three miles south of NY Route 20 in Richfield Springs, with two concrete ramps and parking for 40 cars and trailers.
That makes Richfield feel like a lake town in a practical way. Canadarago is not just scenery. It is ramps, weeds, walleye, ice, tournament days, and the quiet knowledge that the town’s local rhythm changes when the water freezes.
