Enhanced STAR Has Age and Income Tests Worth Checking Early

Owners approaching 65 should check Enhanced STAR age, income, and local filing timing before the school-tax year is already underway.

If a homeowner is turning 65, check Enhanced STAR early. It gives a larger benefit on a senior’s main home when the income rules are met. The income limit can change by school year. One resident owner must be at least 65 by December 31 of the benefit year.

A person with STAR may also qualify for the senior citizens exemption. That is a separate benefit. It depends on local rules and papers filed with the local assessor.

Check the state STAR rules. Then ask the assessor about the local senior exemption. Keep the property address, benefit year, age and income proof, filing date, application, and renewal steps together.
