Ithaca general permits run through the city building route

Ithaca owners and businesses should check the city general-permit and department pages before starting permit-sensitive work.

Published June 24, 2026 · Last verified June 24, 2026

Start an Ithaca permit question on the city’s General Permit page. The city also has a list of its departments. Use these city sources instead of a campus, county, or nearby town process.

The route can help with repairs, renovations, signs, business space, and other work that may need an inspection. Find the city department that handles the job. Before work starts, ask which forms, plans, fees, and inspections apply.

Have the property address and a short description of the job ready. Keep the form, application, permit, or ticket number with the project. If the city sends the job to another department, save that department’s name with the number.
