Before opening a wall or finishing a basement in Islip, check with the Building Division. Do the same before relying on an old building certificate.
The division handles building and plumbing permit forms. It checks the job under the New York State Uniform Code, the Town of Islip Zoning Code, and local rules for subdivisions and land development. Permit forms must be filed online.
The Records Section handles Building Division FOIL requests. It also schedules inspections, keeps papers and certificates, and closes a job with a Certificate of Occupancy or Compliance.
Before buying, ask which building records exist. Before work starts, ask what must be filed and inspected. For a missing record, use the FOIL route. Have the address and permit or certificate number ready.
