Ghent keeps a bandstand kind of town memory alive

Ghent has farms and country roads, but on summer evenings it also has a town-band rhythm.

The band traces its concert tradition to 1899 and was still playing a free series in 2026. Programs move through marches, show tunes, waltzes, and light classical music, the sort of mix built for an audience that arrives with folding chairs and recognizes more than one tune.

The band historian describes listening “just like folks have since 1899.” That line works because the tradition is not sealed away in an archive. Volunteer musicians still gather, people still come out, and the old repertoire remains part of the town calendar.

Current dates and locations can change with each season, but the larger habit has lasted through generations of Ghent summers.

For an evening, town history is not something to read. It is something people can sit together and hear.
