Genesee pistol permits have a Clerk office and a State Police lane

Genesee pistol-permit holders should keep County Clerk office work and State Police recertification in separate lanes.

Published July 6, 2026 · Last verified July 6, 2026

Genesee County pistol-permit questions split into two lanes. The local Pistol Permit Office is in the County Clerk’s Office at 15 Main Street in Batavia. Recertification is different. The county sends those questions to State Police, not the County Clerk.

That split helps a Batavia resident, a Le Roy mover, a Darien farm family, or someone in Pembroke, Bergen, Byron, or Oakfield ask a cleaner question. Is this an application, amendment, co-ownership, handgun registration, fee, duplicate, or other county office question? Or is it a State Police recertification question?

Keep the Batavia County Clerk route and the State Police route separate. Use the County Clerk for local permit tasks. Use State Police for recertification. Take legal questions about eligibility, ownership, carrying, sales, or transfers to the office that handles that issue.
