Plan Empire State Trail Trips With Closures

The Empire State Trail is easier to use when the route and closure pages are checked together. The official map breaks the route into Hudson Valley Greenway, Erie Canalway, and Champlain Valley sections, with segment links and a route-and-distance tool. Trail sections may be temporarily closed for construction or repairs, sometimes for several weeks or longer, and detours may not always be signed. Before a long ride or walk, pick the segment on the map, read the current closure list, and save the relevant local detour.

Save the map for the exact segment, not just the statewide route. Put the segment endpoints, current closure notice, and any local detour in the same trip plan. Include the return leg. If the route uses an on-road section, make that clear before a child, dog, or less confident rider joins the outing. A trail name alone does not settle the surface, traffic, crossing, or closure question for the miles ahead.
