Brookhaven's Longwood Estate Gives the Big Town a Ridge Anchor
Brookhaven's Longwood Estate helps make the sprawling town legible through one Ridge historic site with house, school, barn, and cemetery layers.

Brookhaven is large enough to hide some of its inland history. Longwood Estate in Ridge gives that history a physical address.
The town-owned property at 205 Longwood Road is also known as the Smith Estate. A circa-1790 home stands with a barn, another outbuilding, the Ridge School House, and a family cemetery. The site has carried National Landmark status since December 1981 and a historic district designation since July 1985.
Those pieces put family land, education, work, and burial on the same Ridge property. They also pull Brookhaven away from a single picture made from shoreline, highways, and newer development.
That is useful in a town spread across so many hamlets and older communities. Longwood gives the inland middle a place to stand: house, schoolhouse, barn, cemetery, and public historic site gathered together.
Brookhaven has many local stories, and Ridge deserves to be part of the conversation.
